BRICK is a modern twist on the film noir genre. Student Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) prefers to stay an outsider, until one day when his ex-girlfriend, Emily (Emilie de Ravin), reaches out to him unexpectedly just to suddenly vanish again. With the help of his genius friend, the aptly named Brain (Matt O’Leary), Brendan sets out to find her, only to discover it is too late. She is already dead. His investigations lead him to a variety of interesting characters: substance-abusing Dode (Noah Segan), seductive Kara (Meagan Good), jock Brad (Brian White), femme fatale head cheerleader Laura (Nora Zehetner), and the supposed leader of them all, The Pin (Lukas Haas). This low budget film is like no other film of its genre, and while it may take a second viewing to understand what is going on, it is a truly fantastic cinematic endeavor.

Brain

Matt plays the Brain, Brendan’s only friend. He is not just a nerd, but a genius, seen completing a rubik’s cube during the course of a short conversation. He is enlisted to be Brendan’s eyes and ears around school grounds, gathering any information on what could have happened to Emily. Brain is never seen interacting with any other character besides Brendan, and the final scene of the film shows him seemly disappearing into Brendan’s head. This leads viewers to speculate if Brain is actually real or just Brendan’s inner conscious.
